Legacy

Legacies help define people. Legacies between professional athletes and people how have gone far in the education system. Most of the people who become professional athletes have humble beginnings, with little extra money to purchase miscellaneous items. Thus they usually focus on a sport. When the parents lack in educational background they can not help foster academic achievements. So the kids from an early age put all their eggs in a basket.

An example of this can be seen with LeBron James, winner of four MVP awards and two NBA championship rings and two NBA championship rings, he grew up in a house with four generations of his family living in it, while also having been homeless at one point during the fourth grade. How can someone how has huge accomplishments come from nothing? Simple he started to play the game since he was young, and realized he has some natural ability in the sport. Then he started playing more and more instead of studying for a math test or some other academic event. When he was in high school he garnered national attention as the top high school basketball player in the country. With his unique combination of size, athleticism and court vision, he became one of the premier players in the NBA for the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was able to accumulate a net worth of 375 million dollars with never having attended college.

Their are also the intellectuals such as Richard Feynman, Theoretical physicists.  He grew up with parents that pushed him towards success and put academics over athletics. His father was a sales manger, while is mom stayed at home to look after him. His father encouraged him to ask questions to challenge orthodox thinking, and who was always ready to teach Feynman something new. While he alone has talent that is indisputable it was his background that helped propel him to prominence.

While both LeBron James and Richard Feynman reached prominence in different fields and left behind a legacy that will be unforgettable, they also reached these results due to the circumstances thy were put in since a young age.

Dress for success

Do clothes help a person to succeed. If two people who have the same resume and go in for an interview, and one of them is wearing a suit and tie, is that person more likely to get the job? Of Course! Clothes help to define a person, when in a suit and tie (or for women a nice dress that does not show to much skin) people are a lot more confident, because they know that they look sharp and their attitude corresponds to how they look. This can be seen when a person is wearing sweat pants and a tank top they are not capable of giving off a serious, respectable tone.

Their is more to just the clothes that help a person succeed. It is equally important to wear a good attitude and always smile because this can help give a good impression to a persons boss, person interviewing, or really just people in general. When a person goes into an interview with a grumpy arrogant attitude no one will respect them, and work with them.

Suits can give make you feel confidence and confidence is important because the more self confidence you have, the more you value yourself and your capabilities, which means the more valuable you feel; this is what creates the effect of naturally holding your head up high, since you have higher self esteem and are proud of who you are. While you are confident you can accept, handle, learn, gain, and benefit from any situation, circumstance, or outcome; in this way, you naturally replace fear and anxiety with greater confidence in yourself and your abilities.

I think that the way people dress is directly correlated with how much someone can succeed. That is why every day people should dress hoping to impress people.

Greek Life: Love or Hate

When going to college a lot of people think weather or not they should enter greek life. When I say Greek Life I don’t mean living in Greece, eating greek food all the time, and speaking Greek. I am talking about college greek life, Fraternities for men and Sororities for Women. This is a organization in which people in college go to make friends and party, party a lot. Some people think that college is a place that should only be used to get smarter in order to pursue a career that can make the person a good amount of money. Other people think it is a social place that is used to escape the nest created by their parents. Now some schools more than 30% of the student population is involved in greek life.

A lot of parents are against greek life because they think their child will drink to much and not be able to properly dedicate themselves to their academics. On the other end of the spectrum though some parents think that greek life is a great way to have their kid get involved with the school and make lots of new friends.

However the parents do not really have much say in this matter it is really all about what the student thinks. At some schools one of the factors for “rushing”(term that describes trying out for the sorority or fraternity) usually involves “Hazing” which is where the people who are already in the group will make the new comers drink a lot and do a lot of stupid things as well. To some this is a very enjoyable thing while others fear this event.

All in all I think that greek life can be very beneficial for some and not beneficial for others.

SAT

The term “SAT” can stand for many things System Access Terminal, Submarine Advisory Team, Sick and Tired, but it actually stands for “Scholastic Assessment Test”. Personally I am against this test for a multitude of reasons. One reason is that it is not really a “Scholastic Assessment Test” it is a “how well did you study test”. Over 2 million people take the SAT every year and yet what does it show? Nothing except for the amount of money someone has put into studying for this test that does is incapable of helping someone in life, except maybe getting them in to a good college.

$83 (the official College Board SAT Study Guide costs $31.99. There is a required $51 fee to register for the SAT the test takes 4 hours) and four hours aren’t the only things students invest in for the SATs used to be what people would pay for the SAT, but now SAT readiness classes may cost from $1,000 to 1,500.  “Intensive” boot camp classes, such as Elite’s “SAT 2100 Plus Program,” feature many hours of work and preparation and sometimes cost upwards of $3,000. This just helps differentiate different social classes more and more by allowing the wealthy to continue to get good scores and stay wealthy while the lower class has to struggle with what they have.

I think that colleges should except students not based on one test, but on the entirety of their career such as GPA, Volunteer work, Extracurriculars, and other such things. That way colleges will be excepting more well rounded students.

Life with a Tail

Their are many creatures that live on earth that have a tail. For instance there are monkeys, rats, cats, dogs, salamanders, etc.  I like to think that if humans had tails that life could be a lot more comfortable, even an evolutionary adaptation. Now I am not talking about a small stub for a tail, I am talking about a long, strong, and useful tail like that of a monkey. Monkeys are capable of using their tails to swing from vine to vine, experience otherwise foreign without the use of a tail. I propose that all humans should have a multi purposeful tail like these animals to help make our lives even easier then it already is.

In a hypothetical situation, when I carrying my juice in one hand and am texting in my other hand, what can I use to change the channel on the television. The answer is simple I could just use my tail by wrapping it around the remote and then press the buttons. Another very practical use for a tail would be at the amusement park or any place where you will have to wait in line the majority of the time you stay their, when there is no where to sit you can just put the tail on the ground and make it like a chair (kind of like Tigger in Winne the pooh).

A tail can be a essential part to humans way of life, just as useful if not more useful than the hand.

A poem written by Kym Crosby helps sum up my feelings on tails.

“Why is it do you suppose, that bears have hairs between their toes,
And something else to comprehend, is why are tails just at the end?
It poses such a complex riddle, for why can’t tails be in the middle,
I know it may sound quite obtuse, but does every tail serve a use?

It seems a few tails were designed, to keep flies off a beast’s behind,
While others have majestic tails…for instance peacocks and blue whales.
Some creatures have a tail so small, it seems they have no tail at all,
Hippos, guinea pigs, and snails, all appear devoid of tails.

The elephant, huge, and jungle king, has a small and hairy piece of string,
Gorillas, apes, and chimpanzees, can’t use their tails to swing through trees.
Roo tail soup, it makes me shudder, at what we do with kanga’s rudder,
But the fate of lamb’s tails is quite shocking; we chop em off and call it docking.

To conclude, it seems quite odd…that the last thing made by God,
The human being who rules the earth, has never had a tail from birth.
The lord it seems, has made a stance…. “No human tails in underpants”
And that’s why we wear” (ABC.net tails – a poem by Kym Crosby

Immigration VS. Refugees

“sentiments and closed-door policies. But in the case of highly skilled immigrants, these policies are a recipe for stagnation.”-James Surowiecki (this quote shows that their will still be immigration just less wide spread.)

I like to think that their are two types of movement for people immigration and refugees. As defined by dictionary.com a refugee is “ a person who flees for refuge or safety, especially to a foreign country, as in time of political upheaval, war, etc.” and immigration as “the action of coming to live permanently in a foreign country.”. Now with the Syrian crisis going on in much of Germany and other european countries— Although I am not very sympathetic to their cause. What makes me un sympathetic? The fact that the Syrian’s are going to Germany and not some of the saudi Arabian countries in the near by area.

I like to think that one of the reasons that the Syrian’s choose Germany over nearby areas is due to the want for a better climate. Arab countries are almost always hotter than the european countries which can be nice. A friend of mine once said “People further south in the hemisphere generally want to move further north to a certain point, you never see people in Florida building canoes to go to Cuba, you see people from Cuba trying to build canoes to go to Florida.”  this is one reason why i think that the Syrians are not refugees but immigrants.

Another reason for thinking this is that in the european countries the Syrian’s are not assimilating to european culture. When a train would stop a multitude of Syrian’s would get on without any train ticket and then be forced to leave at the next stop. However hardly any europeans ever do this and so it is my thought that the Syrians are not even open minded enough to try and learn these rules and regulations, that is the real issue if they were going to Europe as refugee’s only i would be more sympathetic to their cause but because of their unwillingness to learn i am far less sympathetic.

Why i am against feminism!

Feminism is like a war that will never end. Feminism as defined by dictionary.com is “the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men.” however i feel women already have equal rights. There are no jobs that women can’t get, yet women have never been a head coach for a men’s professional sports team, Navy Seal, and Catholic a priest. To be a men’s professional sports team coach you usually need to have played the sport, and women have not played men’s sports because they do not have the physical capabilities to do so. This leads to why women are not navy seals, they are not strong enough to make it past the training. Why would you want a military officer to do something when they are not able to do things some of the other males can do. Lastly women are not priests solely because it is what the catholic church says and if women don’t like that then don’t be catholic (I am not against women having these jobs i am just pointing out these are some of the reasons why they don’t occupy these jobs).

“Many modern-day feminists engage in man-bashing rather than making dignified demands for equality, as the feminists of the early twentieth century did.”(Spiked online news article) this line is a perfect example of why i am against feminism, women are no longer fighting for equal rights, they are fighting for superior rights, and this totally changes their original goal. One of the feminist arguments is that some of the male professional athletes make more money than that of female, that is because it is more entertaining to watch male sports and people will pay to watch them (thus they get paid more money).

Some feminists also think that it is bad for male athletes to beat their wife or kid (I also think this is bad), yet are capable of looking the other way when Hope Solo an american soccer goalie beat up her sister and nephew during a party that was going on in her residence in Seattle. Yet while NFL and NBA players are getting suspended for these actions she is able to continue playing her sport.

Feminism is to women as misogyny is to men.

Whales!

Whales, Whales, Whales There are approximately 86 species of whales living on planet earth. Whales similar to humans in that they are warm blooded and also breathe in air, they also nurse their young. The Blue whale is the largest animal on earth with a weight of 420,000 pounds or 190,508 kilograms. The Sperm whale has the biggest brain to have ever existed on planet earth. Bowhead whales are one of the oldest mammal on earth with a life expectancy of around 200 years, In 2007 a bowhead was caught outside Alaska with a harpoon in it and by determining the age of the harpoon scientists were able to find out the age of the bowhead which was 130 years ago and that was when the whale was an adult (dailymail.co). All toothed whales hunt by using echolocation, Baleen whales will open their mouth and try to filter through the ocean in hopes of getting food (whale facts.org).

Migrating is defined by thefreedictionary.com as, “To change location periodically, especially by moving seasonally from one region to another.”this is something that whales do.  The whales will travel to colder water to feed, and warmer water to give birth. Once the whale has given birth the mother whale will nurse the baby whale for approximately 1 year which can add up to 15 feet on the whale.

One of the still unknown facts in whale life is how they pick a mate and how they have Coitus, do to the difficulty of following them and going deep enough to observe the act. With the blue whale being the largest species in the world the Right whale has the largest testicles at a weight of 1,100 pounds per testicle adding up to a total of 2,200 pounds for the pair this is 10 times the size of those of the blue whale. What truly amazes me is the fact that even though whales are very large, they are one of the more majestic beasts of the sea!

Famous Haiku’s

“A Whales Testicle

They are Brobdingnagian

Their are two of them” – Conrad

“Creature of great mass

Majestic flight through your sea

Weightlessly drift on” written by unknown (found Storywriter.com)

“A curious beast,
The water’s one good partner,
Was the great blue whale.” – By Matthew Schmidt
